Whew! Gas prices are below $4.00 a gallon! Did you see that? $3.89 at Arco! Great! Wow, I'm so happy that I can afford to fill up my car again.
Just a few comments I've heard recently that cause me to shake my head in disgust. The United States has long been shielded from the high cost of fuel and we've been drinking it up like a drunken sailor on leave in the Phillipines. We have had the technology to create 50 MPG plus vehicles for years.
How do I, an ordinary citizen know this? Because we own a 1988 Diahatsu hatchback that gets 51 MPG. We also owned a GEO Metro with similar mileage, but these vehicles are no longer in production. Why? Cheap gas, and an oil / automobile establishment that brain washed the American public into believing that bigger and more powerful was better. Why do we need a Cadillac Escalade to take the kids to soccer practice? The auto industry took advances in technology and used it to increase power and output rathr than mileage. Isn't it amazing that one year into the fuel crunch we see ads for all these new hybrids? Detroit can't act that quickly to new concepts. They've had this on the table for years, they just didn't bother with it because we were busy buying huge expensive (and very profitable) SUV's and feeding the cash cow of excess.
The worst thing that can happen to the U.S. is for gas prices to dip to "more reasonable" prices and for us to once again become complacent, as we did in the 80's and 90's after the gas crisis of the 1970's. We need to demand better fuel economy, alternative fuels and renewable energy. Note: This does not mean biofuels. You like to eat don't you? Do you really think we'd be involved in the Middle East if we weren't addicted to their oil? Would we be losing thousands of American lives and causing misery for innocent citizens if we did not need foreignoil to maintain our way of life?
Wake up America. Demand better, demand accountability. Do the right thing.
